DNSChanger Deadline is Monday. Are You Ready?

FBI shutting down temporary DNS servers affecting those that have been affected by the dreaded DNSChanger virus.

According to the latest FBI estimates from July 5, approximately 64,000 computers in the United States are expected to lose Internet access when the temporary Domain Name System servers are shut down July 9. The number is closer to 300,000, worldwide, with the top infections in the US, Italy, India, and Great Britain, Vikram Thakur, principal security response manager at Symantec

Check, Clean Up
Google and Facebook are among some of the companies that display warnings to infected users. Users can also check if they are infected using the online scanner at the FBI-run DNS-OK.US and both Qualys and McAfee have similar scanners. Several companies, including Webroot, claim their security software can detect and remove the infection. The DNS Changer Working Group recommends that users use multiple tools to make sure the infection is not present.

While automatic scanning is great, manually "checking the DNS server IPs is better," Marco Preuss, a Kaspersky Lab researcher, wrote on Securelist. If your DNS servers are listed as one of the rogue ones, manually changing them to public DNS servers, such as the one from Google: 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4, or the ones from OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 will fix the problem.

You've been warned several times. Take the time this weekend to make sure you are clean, or come Monday, you will wish you'd printed out this post so that you would have something to reference.
