Wikipedia Searcher through command promt

Do you hate having to go through so many web pages just to look something up on Wikipedia? You could just set the English Wikipedia to your home page, or you could do this!
It is a simple batch file that asks for the search topic, then brings you to the Wikipedia entry on that topic.

Step 1Making the Batch File

First you want to make your batch file, this is very simple and many of you will already know how to do this.
First, open up a notepad document.
Go to -File-, -Save As...-, then in the 'File name' textfield, type in 'WikipediaSearcher.bat'. The name doesn't matter, but .bat is essential.
Remember to switch 'Save as type:' to 'All Files' from 'Text Documents'

Step 2Putting the code in

iNavigate to the wherever you saved your Batch File, then right click and 'Edit' it.

This is the code I used, as you can see it is quite simple:

@echo off
Color 0a
Title Wikipedia Searcher
echo Enter your search topic:
set /p topic=
start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%topic%

Basically it prompts you for a search topic, saves that as a variable topic, then starts a webpage ending in that topic.

Step 3Test it out!

Batch Wikipedia Searcher
i
To test, just double click on the batch file, type in the topic, and hit enter!

IMPORTANT: If you want to enter a topic with MORE than one word, put in underscores instead of spaces.
For example, enter West_highland_white_terrier instead of west highland white terrier.

Thanks for reading!

Watch ASCII Star Wars in Windows XP, Vista and 7

Watch ASCII Star Wars in Windows XP, Vista and 7

There is a complete copy of Star Wars done entirely in ASCII characters that you can watch in the Windows operating system (or any OS that supports telnet). The only thing required to watch it is an internet connection; speed does not matter.

To watch it on Windows XP,
  1. Go to Start, Run.
  2. Now type "telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl" without the quotes and press Enter.
On Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Telnet is turned off by default in the latest versions of Windows. So, in order to watch star wars, you must first enable telnet by going to Control Panel › Programs › Turn Windows Feature On or Off and ticking both the telnet check boxes. After doing that, follow the steps given below:-
  1. Go to Start, Search.
  2. Type telnet and press Enter.
  3. In the following command prompt window, type "o" without quotes and press Enter.
  4. Now type "towel.blinkenlights.nl" without the quotes and press Enter.
If you do not need telnet anymore, you can turn it off.

A command prompt window like the one in the image will open with the movie being played in it. See the movie yourself. Did you enjoy watching this new version of Star Wars? Well, I did and know it for sure that you would have too.

Change Facebook Theme

Change Facebook Theme Color, Appearance, Skin, Style or Template

Facebook is a social networking site which enables people to connect with friends and people around. That's how Facebook is usually introduced but Facebook is beyond the requirement of being introduced as almost everyone is on it. But Facebook has one flaw, the default blue theme is really boring.

Some even consider it an annoyance while visiting Facebook. As Facebook does not allow users to change its theme like MySpace used to, users are left with no other option but to bear the theme Facebook wants them to use.

However, it is relatively easy to change the Facebook theme to a stylish one using a Firefox addon and custom themes which are available free of cost on the internet.

An example of the final outcome would be something like in the image.

Change Facebook Theme
This is the Ferrari theme. More themes are available for you to choose.

Requirement: The basic requirement for this to work is to have Mozilla Firefox 3.5 or higher.

Steps to achieve this: The following steps should be carried out to successfully change Facebook theme.

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox and install click here to go to firefox addon 'Stylish' addon.
  2. Follow the basic steps to install the addon.
  3. Restart Firefox after successfully installing the Stylish addon.
  4. Login to your Facebook Account and click on the small 'S' button in your Firefox status bar.
  5. Click on "Find Styles for this Site" to open a new tab with free themes to use for Facebook.
  6. Click on any theme and a preview will be shown.
  7. If everything is fine in the previewed theme, click on "Install with Stylish" button at the top right corner of the page.
  8. A dialog box will open.
  9. Click on Install in the dialog box.

Microsoft Surface tablet: Windows 8 tablet PC specs and features

Microsoft Surface tablet: Windows 8 tablet PC specs and features

    Microsoft Surface tablet officiall page

Download info  of  windows RT and Pro
Microsoft has finally entered the tablet arena with Surface, a 10.6-inch rival to the iPad. The announcement comes around two years after Apple launched its iPad. The delay that is, but the Redmond giant has more than made up for it by making the Surface more than just an entertainment device.
The Surface is an ambitious effort by Microsoft that directly takes on Apple and the horde of Android-powered mobile computing devices. The tablet from Microsoft is a hardware-software combo right from the heart of Microsoft. The same as we predicted a Windows RT version, it’s quite a surprise that Microsoft has thrown in a Windows 8 version of the Surface that will take the tablet war to the next level.
    Surface with Windows RT
The Surface tablet with Windows RT will run on ARM-based processor. This version of the tablet is 9.3mm thick and weighs just 676 grams. The 10.6-inch screen features a 16:9 widescreen ClearType HD display that’s aimed at both students and professionals. The RT version is capable of running MS Office 15 and should be a lure for professionals, who for this reason stayed away from the iPad.
The Windows RT-based Surface comes in two versions – 32GB and 64GB storage options. Storage can be increased via a microSD slot, but there’s no news on how much it can be expanded to. There is support for USB 2.0 and there’s a Micro HD Video port for connecting to external displays.
    Surface with Windows 8 Pro
The Surface tablet with Windows 8 Pro will run on an Intel processor that will be capable of running regular applications. Additionally, the tablet will offer a higher resolution screen and more options, including a better battery life geared towards the demanding professional.
The features come at the cost of design. The Windows 8 version is 13.5 mm thick and weighs 903 grams – that’s 4.2 mm thicker and 227 grams heavier than the Windows RT tablet. Compared to the Windows RT tablet, this one offers USB 3.0 with USB 2.0 compatibility, and a mini DisplayPort Video.  The Surface Windows 8 Pro model comes in two versions – with 64GB and 128GB storage options. There’s a microSDXC slot for extra storage.
    Common feature and Accessories
The Surface tablet is built using magnesium alloy, what Microsoft likes to call VaporMg. The Surface comes with an integrated Kickstand and a Touch Cover – with a number of colour options. The supplied Touch Cover keyboard is 3-mm thick and connects to the tablet with a single magnetic click. This one feature we say is naturally ‘inspired’ from the Apple iPad!
Surface also features dual cameras – while the front one is for chatting, the rear-facing camera is angled to 22 degrees that can be used to record events at ease with the Kickstand flipped out. Additional features include dual speakers and dual microphones, which Microsoft says are tuned for Skype.
Microsoft’s future in the tablet war
Microsoft hasn’t divulged much about the specifications of the tablets, but we can safely assume there won’t be dearth of takers when the Surface hits the market. Microsoft said that the tablets will be priced competitively. Apart from the grappling with the price of the iPad, Microsoft should be able to manage third-party developers who have played a huge role in making the iPad a success.

Soon, you can ‘print’ your shoes at home

LONDON: Have the perfect dress for the night out but no good heels to go with? Don't worry. A new technology that promises to revolutionize wardrobes in the future is in the works and will allow you to quickly and cheaply 'print' your own perfect shoes at home.

According to trend forecaster Jane Monnington Boddy, a director for market analyst Stylesight, within the next decade or so you'll be able to quickly and cheaply 'print' your own perfect shoes at home. "This will revolutionize wardrobes," she said. "It really is the future of fashion."

It may sound unbelievable, but crude versions of this new technology are already available for around 600 pounds from certain online electronic shops, the Daily Mail reported. Like all hi-tech gadgetry, prices are expected to drop as the technology becomes more mainstream.

The technology though in its nascent stage is based on 3D printing which operates in a similar way to your inkjet printer, which prints ink in layers to form a image. Instead of ink, however, a 3D printer uses molten plastic to create a solid object.

Hundreds of fine, 0.1mm-thick layers are stuck on top of each other by the machine to produce the item. The printers themselves look like a cross between a microwave and a bread machine, and are about the same size.

Vice-Chancellor of VTU failed in 7 semesters

    Source :Deccan Herald

The head of Karnataka’s premier technical education umbrella institution, Visvesvaraya Technical University (VTU), failed in seven of the ten semesters of his undergraduate degree course in mechanical engineering.

H MaheshappaHe finally managed to pass the course, but only after many attempts, adding up to a total of 25 marks sheets. He now heads a university which has 200 engineering colleges functioning under it. And the High Court is looking at his claims that he passed in first class. The stack of marks statements of his shows that he passed only 3 semesters of the 10 without failing in any subject, making repeated attempts to pass some of the papers in the rest of the semesters. He could pass two subjects of the seventh semester only after he passed the 9th and 10th semesters.

While Maheshappa completed semesters nine and ten in 1982, he reappeared for two subjects of the seventh semester – machine design I and estimating, specification and engineering economics – in March 1983. In the ninth semester too he failed in two subjects – metrology and automatic control engineering – in Feb/March, 1982 and he cleared these papers along with the 10th semester.

Student at the Government BDT College of Engineering, Davangere affiliated to University of Mysore, Maheshappa obtained a post-graduate degree and doctorate from Bangalore University, where it was not mandatory to submit a degree certificate while seeking entry to a PG course or doctoral programme.

It is not mandatory for a person to have a first class degree to become a VC, but Maheshappa has been accused of making false claims before the search panel that selected him to head the VTU for three years from 2010. While he has claimed that he has a first class degree in BE, those who have filed a public interest litigation in the High Court have alleged that he has just a second class degree, and contrary to his claim did not guide any PhD student.

The University of Mysore, during 1980s, used award an engineering degree based on the scoring of the last two semesters. Maheshappa’s 10th semester marks card (August/September 1982) mentions that he obtained second class. He failed in two subjects and his total scoring was 393 out of 775.

He passed the subjects later. In the final semester, he secured 830 out of 1400. While the university awarded him second class going by the marks he had scored in the first attempt, he has claimed that after the second attempt he made in the 9th semester, the percentage crossed 60 per cent.

Copies of the marks cards, obtained under the RTI, show that the University seems to have committed an error in the column indicating ‘Total Marks’.

While the ‘Total Marks’ for the 9th semester was 775 in the statement of marks of Feb/March 1982, the same is shown as 770 in the final semester marks sheet, where both marks scored in 9th and 10th are mentioned.

The total scoring of two semesters stands at 830 out of 1400 (59.24 %). But it should be 830 out of 1425 (58.24%).

Maheshappa, in the CV submitted to the search committee, had stated that he had ‘guided’ four PhD students. But a document obtained under the RTI from VTU on January 5, 2012 has stated that no student has been awarded PhD under his guidance but he is only ‘guiding’ four students.

K Balaveera Reddy, two-time vice chancellor of VTU, told Deccan Herald: “Any university will go by the marks obtained by a student in the first attempt. The marks obtained by making subsequent attempts to clear a paper are not taken into consideration while declaring class or rank. In case of VTU, the last four semesters aggregate is taken into consideration for declaring class.”

    i360 Tower Bangalore

Get 360 degree view of Bangalore

The structure i360 proposed by an NRI in GIM-2012 promises a 360 degree view of the entire city.
    Outer view of i360 bangalore
Suggested by NRI Neeraj Patil, the structure will rise to a height of 175 metres.
“I want the people to be able to have a bird’s eye view of Bangalore. It has the potential to become a major attraction for visitors and locals alike,” Patil told Express.
The idea of i360 was pitched to  Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda at GIM on Thursday. Patil said that the CM seemed  keen on the idea of having a structure like this in the city. “The CM has given us a single point of liaison to take the plan forward. Now we can start identifying lands and other things for the purpose,” he added.
    inner view of i360 Bangalore
The tower will be built by David Marks, who is also the brain behind the famous London Eye, which is a giant ferris wheel like structure in London.
    full view of i360 bangalore
Speaking to Express, Marks said, “We have tested a similar structure in Brighton which is ready to be put into operation. The team building the Bangalore i360, in case it is approved, will be the same one that worked on the London Eye.” He added that the structure would have a 20 metre base.
“Considering the wind conditions in the city, we should be able to go up to a minimum height of 175 metres,” he added. The tower will occupy the space of a tennis court, according to Dr Patil.
He added that the project would require lands in central Bangalore and close to transport centres.
If London can have its i360 tower, why not Bengaluru? NRI, Dr. Neeraj Patil, has dreamed up a 140m high- rise architectural marvel to provide a 360 degree view of the city, which he is banking on a team of UK architects to accomplish.
He has set the ball rolling already with a meeting with Chief Minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda on Thursday where he put forward his tall proposal for the city's own i360 tower, explaining that it has the potential to become a major attraction for tourists and locals alike.
“The CM has given us a single point of liason in order to take the plan forward, and now we can start with issues like identifying land and other parameters. It will be a public space with all amenities ," Dr Patil reveals.
The i360 tower in London has been designed by Marks Barfieldield, a company run by the husband and wife team of David Marks and Julia Barfield, who also designed the London Eye.
Mr David Marks, who was at GIM -2012, said he was delighted to bring the project to Bengaluru. “We have tested a similar structure in Brighton which is ready to be put into operation.
The team building the Bengaluru i360 if it is approved, will be the same as the one that worked on the London Eye,” he added. The structure in the city could have a 20 meter base with a pod, 18 m in diameter. “It will offer visitors a 360 Degree view of the city .
Considering the wind conditions in Bengaluru we should be able to go upto a minimum of 140 meters in height,” he explained.
The tower will occupy the space of a tennis court , preferably in Central Bengaluru, close to transport centers. Presently a detailed study ofvarious aspects of the project, including its funding is under way.

The people behind the project would now approach the tourism department to conduct a study related to the city and discuss the  sponsorship for the project.
